José Rodrigues dos Santos visited the remains of the Flanders trenches, where Portuguese troops fought in World War I. Most of the research, though, was carried out in Portugal’s Military Archives, in Lisbon. Historical review of the manuscript was made by lieutenant-colonel Vieira Borges, lecturer of military history at the Portuguese Military Academy.
